Do you need this stuff?

I am starting to shop for things for the room. I have a couple questions. Leave me a comment and tell me what you think about . . .

1. Do you think we need (did you use) a rocker/glider? There really isn't enough room in the baby's room for one, but am I going to wish I had one?

2. Crib . . . anything I need to know? Is a drop side necessary? I found one that I really like and it has this little changing table built in (what a space saver) and later it becomes a toddler bed and the changing table becomes a bookshelf. I don't really want a changing table but someone else (Brian, Mom, etc) might prefer it so I thought this was the perfect solutions.

Anything else you care to share about car seats, strollers, etc?! Leave me a comment or shoot me an email!!

  1. I (barely) used that white rocker from my own room with Luke but Charlie always wanted a glider so we got one from Kmart when Wyatt was born. (I just wasn't willing to spend hundreds of dollars for that sort of furniture-we paid $65 for this one and it's been fine. They boys sit in it together and read books.) It's nice to have but certainly not necessary.

I never bought a changing table-I bought both boys a nice dresser (the kind that will last through college) and put a changing pad on top with a basket of diapers and wipes. (I had a changing table someone loaned us when Luke was born but once he got to be a few months old, I had to put all the stuff on the second shelf, which I didn't like. With the dresser, everything was right there on top.)

We used the stoller/baby bucket seat combo ("travel system") with both boys-that bucket seat is so nice when they fall asleep in the car and you can just carry the whole thing in the house. (Sometimes Luke would have just fallen asleep 10 minutes before we got home so we'd set the bucket seat-with him in it-on the floor in his room and he'd finish out his nap that way!) When he turned one we bought a car seat that could face backwards or forward and went up to 100 pounds. (It took him awhile to reach the weight where they say they can ride front facing!)

I still use that same stroller with Wyatt when we're shopping or at the zoo but also have a light weight one we've used for travel. The lighter one is OK-the bigger one is easier to maneuver (and I think it's more comfortable for him.)

There are lots of things out there that are nice to have (baby swings, bumbo seats, back pack carriers, bouncy seats, etc.) that you might use. bBt if you have limited space you might find you can live without most of it. I used more of that stuff with Luke just because people gave it to us. I found I used fewer things with Wyatt because it was just easier to not have so much "stuff"! Your crib/change table/toddler bed combo sounds like a good solution to a small room. Our crib had a drop side-the only time I drop the side is when I'm changing the sheets!

Anyway, I've rambled on for too long! Have fun shopping for all this baby stuff :)

  2. THANKS STEPH!! This is great information! I will reference it over the next few months. Mom came over today with some graph paper and we did some measurements - I just need a bigger room!!

  3. I LOVE my glider and for me it is a must buy. I really, really used it with both kids. In fact I was rocking in it with Harper at bedtime. Oh the sweet memories I have in that chair:)

I had a changing table with Sam- but opted for the dresser with the changing pad on top like your friend described for Harper. I would recommend that if you are tight on space. I love it.

I agree- with Sam I had everything and we put it all in storage. We ended up hardly using any of it with Harper. You will use a bouncy seat in the beginning, a playmat and an exersaucer are good to have. Neither of my kids loved the swing- those things are SO huge.

  4. Amy, I love you blog, very cute!
Here is my take on your questions......
I loved my glider, late night nursing/feeding, fussy baby, just enjoying your baby. You might be able to find one used and get it recovered to match the room decor.
I had the dresser with the changing pad on top, seemed more practical to me :)
We bought the cribs that turn into a full size bed. We have two of these because our oldest two were in cribs at the same time.
Vibrating bouncy seat is a must, IMO. You can probably borrow an exersaucer, mine only used them for a short time.
Emily used a Bumbo seat, it was nice to have.
I think the most important thing to have is some kind of carrier/sling/bjorn to carry your sweet baby!
Good luck Amy and Brian, I am so happy for you!

  5. Hey Laura!!! Thanks for the advice. I think the glider is now officially on the shopping list. I can't wait to "wear" the baby. That is my favorite! Your girls are so pretty. I wish we could get together sometime!

  6. Amy...this is late, but maybe you could still use some advise. I also just bought a dresser that came up to my waist and then put a changing pad on it. You can screw the pad on the back of the dresser and it won't slide around. We use ours everyday and don't skimp on the pad, the cheap ones go flat fast.

We did not get a rocker and I would recommend it. I am constantly rocking him with my body in bed or in the living room and in bed it keeps Luke up. You may use it more than you think, but putting it in the baby's room is not necessary. You'll want to be in a common area because you will use it often.

    My opinions...
